I was beginning to feel like Cabin Fever was settling in. It's been very cold all week and I hadn't had a chance to be outside at all. So today I bundled up and headed out to a nature trail to get some fresh air and to photograph the same area I had done last summer and fall. There were a few other hearty souls out there but not like it is when the weather is warm. This part of the trail is surrounded by wetlands and is typically filled with the sounds of birds. Today it was unusually quiet. I saw one large white bird pass over head, a snowy owl perhaps, on my way out. On the way back I changed lenses and started stepping off the trail in knee deep snow to do some macro shots. While taking one of these shots I finally heard the twittering of some birds. When I located them I was thrilled to see that the sound was coming from a small group of bluebirds. I changed lenses again and took a few shots but when someone walked by with a dog and they took off. I waited and sure enough they came back and I was able to get a few more shots. They were shy and if I tried to take a few steps closer they'd move a little further off. I'll be back out there again next weekend hoping to see them once more.

We have bluebirds here year round. The university has put bird houses up all over every fence line and expanse of field they can get permission to. If memory serves they were invesitgating the direction the house should face. Anyway, beautiful picture. He does look rather cold doesn't he?
ReplyDeleteFantastic! I love reading the story behind the shot, as well. I'm always so impressed with your photos - nice work!! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a spectacular shot - not only the bird, but the texture of the bark. I'll have to hunt out the cardinals around here.
ReplyDeleteExcellent shot. I also enjoyed viewing the rest on flickr.

ReplyDeleteHow fun, searching for the shots. You find some beautiful ones. Love the bluebird.
